Designer Tips
Chandeliers
Hang chandeliers 33" to 34" from table top to the bottom of a chandelier for an 8 foot ceiling. Add 3" for every additional foot of ceiling height.
Mixing Metals
Yes you can! Choose a dominant metal and then select one or two as accents. Concentrate on contrasting and not blending the metals. This will create depth and texture.
Area Rugs
If you are starting a room from scratch, choose the rug first. Its great way to help decide on a color scheme for the space by pulling the accent colors from your rug. Use rugs to define spaces and set boundaries and don't skimp on size. As a general rule, it should be large enough so at least all the front legs of your furniture are on it.
Chairs
Use chairs as style transition pieces. They provide a great way to blend two decorating styles, add texture or color to your space.
Wall Art
When hanging wall art, hang them 2"- 3" apart so they feel connected. Hang art at eye level and make sure to take into account the scale in relation to your furniture.
Small Spaces
Connect small spaces with one cohesive flooring and by using one neutral paint hue (not pure white) to create an even toned room that tricks the eye. Focus on playing with textures instead.
Think Double Duty
Invest in furniture pieces that can serve multiple purposes. Whether its storage in ottomans, or collapsable dining tables, these furniture pieces can solve many small space issues.
Know Your Style
Formal, minimalist, modern, elegant, monochromatic, traditional, industrial? Figure out what you like and don't like. This helps narrow down and personalize your space instead of relying on trends.
